Swamper Barry Beckett Passes Away

1450 AM and 92.3 FM , The Sound, is saddened to hear of the loss of our close friend and musical ally, Barry Beckett.  Barry, one of the founding members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section died in his sleep overnight according to a family spokesperson.  He was 66 years old.

Known affectionately as “The Swampers,” Beckett, along with guitarist Jimmy Johnson, bassist David Hood and drummer Roger Hawkins, performed with a variety of artists including Bob Seger, The Staple Singers and Paul Simon.

Beckett co-produced Bob Dylan’s first platinum album, “Slow Train Coming,” along with the late Jerry Wexler at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios at 1000 Alabama Ave. in Sheffield. He and Wexler also produced “Communique,” the second album by Dire Straits.

We'll post information regarding the funeral services as soon as they become available.  In the interim, please join us on 1450AM  and 92.3 FM this afternoon at 5pm as we present a tribute to the great Barry Beckett.
